Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Seeks Alternate Representative for its Advisory Council FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 10, 1999 The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is accepting applications for the appointment of Alternate Agriculture Representative to its 23-member Sanctuary Advisory Council. The Council consists of representatives from local user groups, education and research institutions, conservation organizations, and Federal and State resource management agencies. Council members provide advice and recommendations to the Sanctuary Superintendent on issues of marine resource protection, education and research. The role of the alternate is to represent their seat at Advisory Council meetings, at the request of the primary member, when the primary member can not attend the meeting. Alternates are encouraged to attend any and all Advisory Council meetings as members of the public. Advisory Council representatives serve as liaisons between their constituencies -- such as the agriculture industry -- and the Sanctuary, by keeping the Sanctuary staff informed of issues and concerns of their constituencies, as well as performing outreach to their constituencies on the Sanctuary's behalf. Anyone interested in applying for the Alternate Agriculture seat on the Council may either request an application package from the Sanctuary office no later than August 27, 1999 or may print the application form and the Advisory Council Charter and Protocols from our web page. Completed applications must be postmarked or received in the office no later than September 3, 1999. Please call Lisa de Marignac at (831) 647-4246 to request an application package. Mail completed applications to the following address: MBNMS Advisory
Council Coordinator Council members serve three-year terms without pay. The Council is based in Monterey and meets the first Friday of every other month at various coastal communities between Cambria and San Francisco. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) manages the 5,322 square-mile Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The Sanctuary runs along 350 miles of coastline, from Rocky Point off Marin County to Cambria Rock off San Luis Obispo County, and extends from the high-tide mark to as far as 53 miles offshore. |
