Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council
Meets in Moss Landing, CA on June 1st, 2001

The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council (SAC) will meet on Friday, June 1st, 2001, from 9:00 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. at the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories located at 8272 Moss Landing Road, Moss Landing, CA. The SAC is scheduled to discuss the Sanctuary's upcoming management plan review, and hear a presentation on SEAWEB (a public survey on oceans). They will also receive an update on the progress of the Alliance of Communities for Sustainable Fishing.

"The Advisory Council, and its working groups, are important tools in getting citizens involved in the management of this Sanctuary," said William J. Douros, Superintendent of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. "At the upcoming meeting, the Advisory Council will get to hear some very interesting results on public attitudes toward oceans and ocean protection. Sanctuary staff will also get some initial input on the process to review and possibly revise our management plan."

Advisory Council members will learn about the Sanctuary's new multicultural education plan, and discuss the role of the Business and Tourism Activity Panel (BTAP). Other topics to be discussed include the annual Sanctuary staff and SAC retreat in August, and a SAC subcommittee's recommendations concerning the National Academy of Public Administration report on the National Marine Sanctuary System.

The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council was established by Federal law to assure continued public participation in the management of the Sanctuary. Its nineteen voting members represent a variety of local user groups, as well as the general public, plus seven local, state and federal governmental jurisdictions. The meeting is open to the public.
