The M/V Cosco Busan Oil Spill, San Francisco & Outer Coast At 8:30 AM on November 7, 2007, the container vessel COSCO BUSAN struck a western tower of the San Francisco Bay Bridge and released as much as 58,000 gallons of fuel oil into the waters of San Francisco Bay. The oil then moved out of the bay into outer coastal waters. CASE CLOSED
The Marine Life Protection Act Initiative (MLPA) On September 21st, after one of the most intensive public processes in ocean governance, the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) will announce the first round of 29 new MPAs (204 square miles) to go into effect on the Central Coast. The new designations significantly increase the protection that marine life living in these areas receive. These protections include long-term safe havens for rockfish and other bottom fishes, migration corridors for salmon, and a diverse environment that abalone, kelp and numerous marine mammals and seabirds need to survive...MORE(9/19/07)

New Monterey Bay Sanctuary Superintendent Named NOAA's National Marine Sanctuary Program has selected Paul Michel as the new superintendent for Monterey Bay. In this role, Michel will oversee management and operations at the sanctuary. He will assume his new duties on April 29, 2007. (4/5/07)
MERITO Cartoon Contest The purpose of this cartoon contest is to create a series of characters in a cartoon strip to promote the importance of water quality and protection of the watershed that leads to the ocean.The cartoon characters will also be used on bilingual materials developed by MBNMS and MBA with an emphasis on the Latino audience. Position Announcement for Monterey Bay NMS: MERITO Program Manager The MBSF is responsible for implementing the components of an existing plan named Multicultural Education for Resource Issues Threatening Oceans (MERITO), working closely with all MERITO partners including the local Latino community, regional marine education partners, and Sanctuary staff.
